Kia Stinger: AEB coming to base models

Upgraded liftback chasing better ANCAP rating

Kia Australia has confirmed it will be adding driver assistance technologies like autonomous-emergency braking (AEB) to entry-level variants of its Stinger liftback.

Speaking with CarAdvice, the Korean manufacturer's local communications boss, Kevin Hepworth, said base 'S' variants have seen the addition of AEB along with adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist from February production.

It's a key equipment upgrade for the Stinger, following the disappointing three-star safety rating handed to 200S and 330S variants late last year due to the lack of AEB and lane-keep assist on the features list.

There's no verdict on whether the update will officially amend the base Stinger's ANCAP score, though the vehicle has been submitted for re-testing.

We'd guess the changes will result in a five-star rating, considering both entry grades met the five-star threshold in Adult Occupant Protection and Pedestrian Protection testing, despite the penalties applied to the scores due to the lack of AEB.

The addition of the safety equipment will likely bring a price rise on the 200S and 330S variants, though Kia Australia hasn't confirmed a figure.

Currently, the base grades ask for $45,990 and $48,990 before on-road costs respectively, undercutting the mid-tier Si models by a substantial $7000.
