Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak revealed

Dual-motor EV race car develops 507kW

The Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak has been revealed this week, ahead of its debut at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb event.

Packing two electric motors, the I.D. R Pikes Peak claims outputs of 680hp (507kW) and 649Nm, along with a 0-60mph (0-96km/h) time of just 2.25 seconds.

At Pikes Peak, the I.D. R will attempt to beat the existing record for electric cars, that currently seats at 8 minutes 57.118 seconds.

"Volkswagen’s goal is to reach the pinnacle of electromobility with the I.D. family," said Dr. Frank Welsch, Volkswagen member of the board of management responsible for development.

"The hill climb on Pikes Peak will definitely be a real acid test for the electric drive."

"Customers have always benefited from the findings made in motorsport, and we expect to take these findings and use them as a valuable impetus for the development of future I.D. models," he added.

The I.D. R Pikes Peak uses a lithium-ion battery system – though exact capacity and range is unknown – also utilising regenerative braking technology to recover power when on the move.

Pikes Peak involves a 4720 vertical-foot climb, 156 corners, and just one chance to set your best time. At the end of June it's also a regular occurrence for temperatures at the finish line to be sitting below freezing.

Stay tuned for an update on the Volkswagen's I.D. R's attempt at Pikes Peak glory, when the event takes place on June 24.
