Skoda ‘Kamiq’ teased

New crossover sketched out ahead of Beijing debut

A new Skoda crossover, expected to be badged Kamiq, has been teased ahead of its debut at the 2018 Beijing motor show next week.

The new city SUV will only be sold in China, and slots in beneath the much larger Kodiaq and similarly-sized Karoq.

Skoda has yet to provide any details about the new car, but we can see the styling is heavily influenced by those two aforementioned cars.

While the new car features the same flat shoulders and squared-off wheel arches as its more expensive siblings, it misses out on the teardrop element below the main headlight units.

Inside, the upcoming crossover features a simple dashboard design dominated by a large central touchscreen, and a slab of faux carbon-fibre.

Reports indicate the new Kamiq will not be based on the Volkswagen Group's current MQB platform, instead using the older A05 platform also featuring in the Rapid.

The Kamiq, if that's what it will be called, will look to grow Skoda's presence in China. The world's most populous nation is already the Czech marque's largest single market.

Skoda sold some 325,000 cars in China last year, accounting for roughly a quarter of its global sales tally.
