Volkswagen Amarok: 200kW confirmed for new V6

German brand refuses to be second best in the power stakes

Volkswagen Australia has confirmed outputs for the uprated Amarok V6 due in the third quarter of 2018, with the revised engine claiming a power output of 200kW, on overboost.

Speaking with CarAdvice, local communications boss Paul Pottinger confirmed the details, while also taking a thinly veiled swipe at the upcoming V6 version of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class.

"We said we'd not be left behind in the ute output stakes," he said. "Now the Amarok's performance superiority is even more pronounced."

Exact timing for the new model is still to be confirmed – currently tagged with "early third quarter" – but we do know the updated Amarok V6 will be running a new Euro 6-compliant version of its 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine.

In normal conditions, the new engine puts out 190kW of power and 580Nm of torque, increasing to 200kW on overboost.

That marks a 10kW and 30Nm advantage over the upcoming Mercedes-Benz X350d due Down Under before year's end, which claims 190kW and 550Nm from its own 3.0-litre oiler.

Stay tuned for a full pricing and specifications breakdown closer to launch.
