Connected cars have been 'a thing' for a while now, with live traffic updates and vehicle-to-vehicle warnings becoming prevalent, but Bugatti is taking things a step further in the Chiron.
Every Chiron is constantly feeding information back to the company's headquarters in Molsheim, keeping technicians updated on vital information 24/7. The on-board tracking system keeps an eye on 10,000 signals from around the car, ranging from detail about the engine's operation to data about the air-conditioning.
It's likened to the live data feeds Formula 1 and DTM teams use to track their cars during a race, albeit operating over a much larger distance.
What does that mean in reality? Bugatti gives the example of an owner getting a phone call informing him the front-left tyre was low on air.
Bugatti gives Chiron buyers the chance to opt out of live tracking and telemetry, if they'd rather keep their information under wraps. Why you'd turn down the option of live, up-to-date information about your car's vital signs is beyond us, by the way.
If something does go wrong, there are three 'Flying Doctors' on hand to solve any problems that arise. From the moment an owner takes delivery of their car, one of these roaming technicians is on call to answer any mechanical questions or, if something serious goes wrong, to board the next flight and assist in getting it fixed.
This sophisticated on-board tracking and monitoring also comes in handy if someone steals your car. Where Veyron owners needed to call Bugatti to report their car missing, the Chiron is capable of reporting itself missing – or noting when it's on a truck, for example.
"Our telemetry system has taken a gigantic leap forwards in almost all respects,” Norbert Uffmann, part of the Bugatti technical development department, said. “In some cases, we have even been able to find customers’ vehicles before the thieves were able to cross the border.”
