MY10 Ford Falcon range to go six-speed

EDIT: The article has been updated to reflect the latest news from Ford.

With the July 1st Euro IV emissions cut-off looming, CarAdvice can reveal that Ford will begin using the ZF Sachs six-speed automatic transmissions across the entire range of Ford Falcons from July 1st, 2010.

Two six-speed transmissions will be available to Falcon customers (both sedan and commercial).

The XT, G6, G6E and G6E Turbo will all be fitted with the renowned six-speed automatic transmission from ZF Sachs.

XR6, Falcon Ute, R6 Ute, XR6 Ute and XR6 Turbo Ute will all come standard with a six-speed manual transmission (TR6060), but will be available with the ZF Sachs six-speed automatic transmission for an additional $1000.

Other changes to the Falcon range include fuel consumption reductions on all vehicles previously fitted with the five-speed automatic gearbox. All petrol Falcon sedans now fitted with the six-speed ZF Sachs automatic transmission will consume just 9.9L/100km and emit 236g/km of carbon emissions.

Falcon utes fitted with column shift automatic gearboxes have now been redesigned to take the new six-speed ZF Sachs automatic transmission.

In addition to drivetrain changes, Ford has also beefed up safety. XR6 and XR6 Turbo utes now receive head/side thorax airbags as standard fitment. Bluetooth phone communication and iPod integration is now also fitted as standard across the entire Falcon Sedan and Ute range.

The new six-speed automatic transmission will weigh an additional 7kg over the current five-speed automatic transmission.

Power output from the revised 4.0-litre I6 will remain at 195kW @ 6,000rpm, likewise for the turbocharged version at 270kW @ 5,750rpm.

Ford has also developed a new catalytic converter that incorporates the latest catalyst technology with a higher cell density within the catalyst brick and a new washcoat.

Ford is yet to announce plans for the XR8 Sedan and XR8 Ute, as their current BOSS V8 engines do not meet Euro IV emissions standards.

The MY10 upgrade comes amid news Ford's liquid injected gas engine has been delayed until early 2011. CarAdvice will keep you updated as more information comes to hand.
