MG has teased a new concept for the Beijing motor show later this month, dubbed X-Motion, said to preview a new SUV that will go on sale in China some time next year.
A trio of shadowy images has been released by the now Chinese-owned British brand, showing a striking and aggressive crossover taking design cues from the beautiful E-Motion sports car concept revealed last year.
The front grille and headlights bear a strong resemblance to the E-Motion and current ZS crossover, though the headlights themselves are a little more angular and feature a more aggressive LED signature instead of the more rounded ‘London Eye’ design of the E-Motion and ZS.
Silver trim adorns the grille frame and inserts, along with the faux intakes in the front bumper, while sharp creases stretch through the bonnet.

While many have drawn comparisons between MG’s latest designs and models from the Mazda range, the front end also bears some resemblance to various members of the Infiniti stable – namely the Q60 and QX50 – right down to the angle of the frontal teaser (see for yourself above).
Looking at the X-Motion’s side profile and partial rear angles, the similarities between it and the Infiniti QX50 become even stronger.
The prominent waist- and hip-line look very similar to that of the QX50, as is the raked tailgate and tail-light design.

Design similarities aside, under the skin the X-Motion is expected to share its platform with the Roewe RX8 and LDV (Maxus) D90, meaning it will be a full-size body-on-frame SUV with up to three rows of seating.
Compared to the comfort-focused RX8 and rugged D90, the X-Motion – which will likely get a different name in line with the GS and ZS nomenclature when it enters production – should be pitched as a sportier offering, as is MG’s positioning in the SAIC group.
In addition to the common underpinnings, the X-Motion should also feature the same 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine as the RX8 and D90 (below) – which in the Australian-market D90 produces 165kW of power and 350Nm of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic as standard.
However, it’s unclear whether this model will feature in the Australian line-up. We’re waiting for an official response from MG’s local division on the topic.
