Smart ForTwo turned into rolling disco – video

Lights, smoke and speakers all present and correct

There are plenty of cars well suited to carting around the makings of a disco. Vans, for example, have plenty of space for the speakers, lights, smoke machines and equipment necessary for a big party.

In a marketing tie-up with a product designer Konstantin Grcic, Smart took what was arguably the least-suited car for carting equipment around – the ForTwo – and turned it into the Mobile Disco. As marketing stunts go, this is an interesting one.

The design team has fitted a gigantic boom arm on the back of a regular ForTwo, complete with a DJ booth featuring a mixer console and gooseneck microphone. To make sure it doesn't topple over when that arm is extended, there are laminated supports on the car's side.

Beyond that gigantic arm, the Mobile Disco runs with everything you could possibly want when setting up a moving party. You've got coloured lights, a smoke machine behind the grille and a JBL speaker system.

"It can be a large-scale version of what the boombox used to be," designer Konstantin Grcic, said. "Back then, it was a real fetish: Snap in a tape, press start, crank up the volume, and witness something happening. I am sure the Smart Mobile Disco could become a kind of present-day boombox."

Check it out in the video above, and let us know what you think of the concept.
