Tesla Model Y to commence production in 2019 – report

Upcoming electric SUV will also be produced in China

Tesla is aiming to commence production of the new Model Y SUV from November 2019, according to a new report out of the US.

Reuters claims two anonymous sources "with knowledge of the supply chain" have confirmed the Silicon Valley-based EV specialist will kick off manufacturing of its second crossover model late next year, along with the commencement of Chinese production two years later.

The report says Tesla is "accepting preliminary bids" for supplier contracts on the Model Y project, though there's no official comment from the company.

Not much else is known about the Model Y, which is set to be the crossover companion to the upcoming Model 3 – spelling 'S3XY' if you align the line-up's names correctly.

It was teased in June last year during the company's 2017 Annual Shareholder Meeting, with CEO Elon Musk confirming the new SUV will be built on an all-new platform as opposed to borrowing the architecture of the Model 3.

According to previous reports, Tesla believes the Model Y will become its volume seller when it hits the market due to the growing global uptake for SUVs.

It looks like 2019 will be a big year for Tesla, with production of the Model Y and Semi truck to commence next year. After that, the manic Roadster is believed to be slated for a 2020 market introduction.

However, the company has been set back by multiple production delays for the Model 3 – which was first revealed two years ago – and question marks over its financial stability.

For now, we'll have to wait and see if it can deliver the product onslaught it has been promising.
