2019 Lexus ES headed for Beijing motor show

Leaked yesterday, teased today

Lexus has teased the ES mid-size sedan ahead of the Beijing motor show, just days after the car's nose was leaked online.

Described as "more than just a pretty face" in the press materials, Lexus has otherwise provided no information about the all-new mid-sizer.

We know it'll have the brand's Spindle Grille up front, along with headlights inspired by the latest LS flagship. The teaser matches up with spy pictures we published in August last year, along with yesterday's leaked picture of the front end.

Under the skin, we're expecting the car to share plenty with the North American Toyota Avalon, which itself shares plenty with the Camry. That should mean it's underpinned by the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), which promises to deliver greater overall refinement and sharper handling.

Power in the Avalon comes from a 3.5-litre V6 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic, or a hybrid drivetrain combining a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. Based on the blue highlights on the badge pictured above, it's a hybrid that will be shown in Beijing.

Just 260 ES sedans found a home in Australia last year, but it's still an important car for Lexus globally. Some 51,398 were sold in the USA last year, accounting for about 17 per cent of all sales.

There's even talk of the rear-wheel drive GS being binned completely, leaving the ES to fly the Lexus large car flag. We'll know more when the car is unveiled on April 25. Stay tuned for our coverage.
