Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint coming with 480kW – report

Look out, BMW M4

Alfa Romeo is working on a new F1-inspired powertrain for the upcoming Giulia coupe, according to reports out of the UK.

If a report published in Autocar is to be believed, there will be two new hybrid setups coming in the two-door Giulia: one based on the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder Veloce engine, and one based on the fire-breathing 2.9-litre Quadrofoglio V6.

The report suggests the system will be based on a HY-KERS setup developed by Ferrari and Magneti Marelli, designed to provide torque fill while the turbo spools up from low revs. Although it's aimed at delivering better performance, the side-benefits of electrification are likely to include lower emissions and better fuel efficiency in town.

In lesser Veloce trim, the energy-recovery system (ERS) is expected to add an extra 50kW to the mix, bumping total power to around 255kW. When applied to the V6 in the Quadrifoglio, the system could deliver a massive 100kW boost.

That would make the cloverleaf coupe a 475kW proposition, just 18kW short of the Ferrari 488 GTB and well beyond the 368kW offered by the current BMW M4 CS.

As for the Giulia Sprint (or GTV) coupe itself, there's talk of the car appearing later this year ahead of a 2019 on-sale date. It's expected to carry significant changes over the four-door, with longer doors, a more rakish rear and a more aggressive nose treatment all on the table.
