Fans of rear-drive sports cars rejoice… maybe. If reports out of Japan are to be believed, a new Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 pair is on the way with more power, more technology and sharper handling.

A report quoting unnamed sources in the Japan Times says the second-generation sports car collaboration is set for a 2021 debut.

The story says the engine will jump from 2.0- to 2.4-litres, but there’s no word on whether it’ll be boosted by a turbocharger. Readers, you’ll no doubt have an opinion on whether a naturally-aspirated successor to the current car is a good idea.

When it arrives, the second-generation BRZ is likely to run with the full suite of Subaru EyeSight safety assistance systems.

The current-generation BRZ was refreshed for the 2018 model year, with an updated infotainment system, mildly revised looks, and the addition of a range-topping tS.

Over on Toyota’s side of the fence, the 86 is now available with an (optional) performance package, bringing gear previously exclusive to the 86 Limited Edition into reach for normal buyers.

Although both cars run with revised gearing, and top-spec models gain some red paint under the bonnet, there’s no extra power, let alone a turbocharger.

In fact Tetsuya Tada has previously told CarAdvice turbocharging would require an all-new platform.

“When we launched 86, I got literally millions of questions from around the world of ‘when would you be launching the turbo version?’” Tada said.

“I believe that often times I answered that there won’t be a turbo version, and there were some articles in the media that Mr Tada doesn’t like a turbo.

“That’s not really true. I do like turbos, however if we come up with a turbo version of the 86 and boost up the power that would result in the necessity of changing the basic configuration completely, to come up with a car that I would be satisfied with.”
