2019 Renault Clio snapped for the first time

And it looks... camouflaged

The next-generation Renault Clio has been spied testing for the first time, wearing some seriously heavy camouflage.

Expected to lob at the 2018 Paris motor show in September, the fifth-generation French supermini is likely to wade into battle with a range of fresh engines, sharper looks and a tech-heavy interior in keeping with that of the current Megane.

There's talk of a fully-electric model to go head-to-head with the incoming Mini Electric, while you can expect to see a broader range of semi-autonomous driver assists on board, in an attempt to tackle the grown-up new Volkswagen Polo.

Along with the battery-Mini and mature Volkswagen, the Clio will be facing off with the Ford Fiesta and Seat Ibiza. In other words, it's up against some stiff competition.

There are hints of Megane in the test mule, including that bonnet line and what appear to be C-shaped daytime running lights. It seems like the 'hidden' door handles have been carried over at the rear, while the tester looks to be running with its exterior mirrors folded. Maybe it's better for aerodynamics?

We haven't seen any pictures of the interior at this point, but we'd bank on a vertically-oriented touchscreen dominating the dashboard. A digital instrument cluster could also feature, as could the rear-wheel steering system from GT-Line and RS Meganes.

We'll have to wait for more details – stay tuned to CarAdvice for all the latest.
