Genesis Essentia concept could enter production by 2021/2022

... if given the green light

The Genesis Essentia full-electric GT concept debuted in New York could be on the road by 2021, if it's given the green light for production.

Speaking to media at the 2018 New York motor show, Genesis senior vice president, Manfred Fitzgerald, said the decision would ultimately depend on public reaction to the concept.

"I think reality would be something around 2021, 2022. That's because we are also launching two dedicated EV platforms. As this is a period of [development for] battery technology that will be on that vehicle," Fitzgerald said.

The rear-wheel drive Essentia concept forms part of Genesis' strategy to bring two dedicated EV platforms to market, revolving around progression in battery technology.

The Essentia doesn't use a skateboard shaped chassis for battery storage. It instead runs with a less conventional 'I' storage method for batteries, running down the centre of the car.

That's why the concept has a long front end. While it doesn't store an internal combustion engine under the bonnet, that space is required to accommodate the north-south battery pack.

Genesis says the Essentia concept will be capable of moving from 0-100km/h in around 3.0 seconds, making it appealing from a performance and visual perspective.

We sat down with Genesis designer Sasha Selipanov at the motor show to get a better idea of the design concepts behind this car — you can check out that interview here.
