Mazda begins CarPlay, Android Auto rollout

North American Mazda6 gets smartphone mirroring tech

Mazda has begun its rollout of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, announcing the features will be added to the North American 6 sedan during their summer.

At this point, the feature is reserved for the facelifted Mazda 6 in North America, but it's not likely to be long before the technology makes its way to Australia.

Interestingly, the feature can also be retrofitted to 2018 Mazda6s, likely in an attempt to stop people postponing their purchase ahead of CarPlay's arrival.

“Some technology is almost necessary and not just a benefit... We are working on that and it will come in 2018,” Masahiro Moro, president and CEO of Mazda North America, said last year.

Asked if it was a lapse in judgement not offering the earlier, Moro suggested it wasn’t a mistake, more a strategy to allow synchronisation amongst markets.

“It’s not necessarily a mistake. Mazda has business in over 30 countries worldwide and our approach was to be open source and how to avoid disruption based on location,” he explained.
