Performance coupe now available with extra doors

The 2019 Audi RS5 Sportback has been revealed for the New York motor show, ahead of an anticipated Australian launch before the end of the year.

Essentially, the Sportback is the same as the RS5 coupe, with the exception of the extra pair of doors at the rear, which will appeal to buyers who can't get an RS4 sedan – the new model is 'Avant' wagon only.

Under the bonnet is the same 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 making 331kW of power and 600Nm of torque. Drive is sent to the company's quattro all-wheel drive system via an eight-speed tiptronic automatic.

The all-wheel drive setup features a centre differential capable of sending up to 85 per cent of torque to the front wheels or 70 per cent to the rear as required. In standard form, the system offers a rear-biased 40:60 split.

Audi claims the five-door RS5 can match the coupe's 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 280km/h.

Equipment includes RS sport seats with optional honeycomb pattern in nappa leather, a flat-bottomed RS sports leather steering wheel, RS-specific bodykit, an RS exhaust system, 19-inch wheels (20-inch optional), RS sports suspension, specific RS displays for the Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster, and red seat belts.

Other optional extras include RS sports suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control, ceramic brakes, Sonoma Green metallic exterior paint (pictured), along with several exterior styling packages – Gloss Black, Carbon and Matte Aluminium.

Compared to the RS5 coupe, the Sportback offers five seats (versus the coupe's four), and a more generous 480L of cargo capacity (up from 465L) behind the second row of seats – which expands to 1300L with the rear bench folded.

The rear back rest is also divided into a 40:20:40 split as standard for increased practicality.
