Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport concept revealed

Five-seat version of US SUV to launch in 2019

The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport concept has been revealed for the 2018 New York motor show, hinting at a production model due sometime next year.

Essentially a five-seat version of the Atlas SUV sold in North America, the Atlas Cross Sport concept is 7.5in (190.5mm) shorter than the vehicle currently on sale, though retains the same wheelbase.

It offers a coupe-like profile compared to the more practical three-row version, giving it a more athletic look. The overall design, however, is still very similar to the standard Atlas/Terramont.

Another key feature other than the more compact body is the plug-in hybrid powertrain residing under the skin. Volkswagen says the Atlas Cross Sport concept combines the current car's 3.6-litre V6 with two electric motors, mated to a six-speed DSG transmission.

System power output is rated at 355hp (265kW), which "potentially enables" the Atlas Cross Sport to accelerate from 0-60mph (0-96km/h) in 5.4 seconds. Top speed for this powertrain is claimed at 130mph (209km/h).

Meanwhile, an 18kWh lithium-ion battery housed in the centre tunnel allows for an "anticipated" electric range of 26 miles (42km).

Volkswagen says the Atlas Cross Sport could also be made available with a mild-hybrid system, using the V6 engine and electric motors but with a smaller 2.0kWh battery pack.

The combined power output for the mild-hybrid would be rated at 310hp (231kW), with 0-60mph (0-96km/h) taking around 6.5 seconds. Top speed would remain at 130mph (209km/h) according to the company.

Five driving modes are available for the PHEV version – E-Mode, Hybrid, GTE, Off-road and Battery Hold/Charge – allowing drivers to tailor the amount of electric and combustion power used, while the 4Motion all-wheel drive offers a further seven modes depending on driving conditions.

Inside, the Atlas Cross Sport concept gets a similar horizontal design to the current production model, though there's more leather-trimmed surfaces and larger displays – potentially previewing a mid-life refresh for the Atlas range.

There's a 10.1-inch infotainment system nestled in the upper section of the dashboard, while the lower section features an additional display for climate controls and other vehicle functions – similar in concept to the new dual-screen setup used by Audi and Jaguar Land Rover.

Drivers are treated to a 12.3-inch Digital Cockpit, which features a resolution of 1440 x 540 pixels. Graphics change according to drive modes, and can be configured to show various information like driving data, navigation, and assistance functions.

Production of the five-seat Atlas will start in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 2019. Stay tuned to CarAdvice for all the latest from the New York motor show.
