Around the Tracks: Autonomous driving, Fullboost in the CarAdvice Stinger

Uber, Uber and our Stinger all feature

When we’re not creating it ourselves, the CarAdvice team spends a lot of time finding and consuming motoring content from all over the world.

Here’s a handful of the articles, videos and social media posts that most caught our eye last week. Some of them are brand-new, others have been online for a while.

Enjoy them – just not too much, okay?

Almost every thing that went wrong in the Uber fatality is both terrible and expected
Brad, Ideas4Brad

Uber was thrust into the spotlight last week, when one of its XC90 self-driving test mules struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona. The world responded with shock and then, once it became clear the on-board driver wasn't necessarily paying attention to the road, anger – warranted or otherwise.

This article takes a look at what led up to the crash, and why it's not such a surprise.

Uber’s Self-Driving Cars Were Struggling Before Arizona Crash
Daisuke Wakabayashi, The New York Times

According to this report from The New York Times, Uber was struggling to make its technology work in certain situations which wouldn't have troubled its competitors, and reported more driver interventions than the likes of Waymo in the lead up to the crash.

The company is no stranger to trouble, having had its test permit revoked by the Californian DMV last year, so these revelations aren't necessarily surprising.

Two Years On, A Father Is Still Fighting Tesla Over Autopilot And His Son's Fatal Crash
Ryan Felton, Jalopnik

The Uber crash is still fresh, but it's not the only autonomy-related death to occur in the last few years. Joshua Brown was killed in Florida when Tesla Autopilot (and the driver) failed to notice a crossing semi-trailer, while Gao Yaning died in Beijing, in an accident allegedly associated with the fledgling driver aid.

What do we think of the Kia Stinger?
Fullboost, YouTube

On a lighter note, the team at Fullboost took our very own Kia Stinger for a weekend and put it through its paces. They noticed how quiet the engine was – one of our big complaints – and noted its highway refinement. The guys also mentioned how much attention it garners on the road.
