2019 Ford Fusion revealed

Debuts Co-Pilot360 safety suite, PHEV goes further

The facelifted 2019 Ford Fusion has been revealed for the North American market, bringing a host of new technologies, refreshed styling, and upgraded powertrain options.

In a global debut for the Blue Oval, the new Fusion comes equipped as standard with Ford Co-Pilot360, which includes a suite of active safety systems like autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, a rear-view camera, and automatic high-beam.

Ford plans to add the Co-Pilot360 safety suite across all its models in the coming years – as per its model rollout announcement last week.

Meanwhile, the plug-in hybrid Fusion Energi gets a new 9.0kWh air-cooled lithium-ion battery pack, allowing for a zero-emissions range of 25 miles (40km) – a near-20 per cent improvement on the outgoing model.

The 1.5-litre Ecoboost turbo four with idle stop/start, meanwhile, is now standard from SE grade up (formerly optional), replacing the previous model's standard 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated inline four.

Further equipment upgrades have been carried out across certain variants too. The one-up-from-base SE trim now benefits from the standard fitment of the 8.0-inch Sync3 infotainment system with 4G LTE WiFi hotspot.

S, SE and SEL variants get a new chrome-bar front grille too, while the Titanium gets a chrome mesh unit. All Fusion models also get a new bootlid panel, LED tail-lights, and fog-lights.

Rounding out the visual changes are two new alloy wheel designs and new colour options for both the interior and exterior.

The 2019 Fusion will make its public debut at the New York motor show next week.

Australia

Ford's local arm has confirmed the Fusion's Oz-market twin – the Mondeo – won't be mirroring the changes seen in its North American counterpart.

"Fusion has had its own slightly different look [and specification] for a few years now," said Damion Smy, product communications manager for Ford Australia.

"We haven’t any news on spec for 2018 beyond our release just yet."
