2018 Mercedes-AMG G63 pricing and specs

All-new V8 off-roader to touch down in August

Mercedes-AMG has announced local pricing for the new G63 will kick off at $247,000 before on-road costs when it touches down in August.

Power comes from 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 making 430kW and 850Nm – up 10kW and 90Nm over the previous model respectively.

It's put to the road through a nine-speed automatic transmission, which works with on-the-fly switchable low-range to deliver the legendary off-road ability for which the G-Wagen is famed.

When you're not scaling mountains – we'd suggest most owners won't be – the car hits 100km/h in 4.5 seconds from a standstill.

It rides on 21-inch wheels, and the Panamericana grille from the AMG GT R has been grafted onto the blocky G-Class shape. Red brake calipers, side-mounted exhaust pipes and the requisite AMG badges are all in place, too, so passers-by know you're not a schmuck with a garden-variety G.

Standard equipment for the Australian market includes the dual-12.3-inch screen setup from the E- and S-Class incorporating the driver's instruments and infotainment system, a 15-speaker Burmester surround sound system, ambient lighting with 64 (yep, 64!) colours, and a sunroof.

There's also electrically-adjustable, heated seats trimmed in nappa leather, and an AMG-specific IWC timepiece in the dashboard. The Comand infotainment system – nope, no MBUX here – comes with the full suite of connected services, a TV tuner and DAB radio. You also get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking and traffic sign recognition feature, also backed by the Mercedes-Benz 'Pre-Safe' system if things do go wrong.

Options include the $5900 Night Package, which brings tinted indicator lenses, black bumper trims, black bash plate and a black spare wheel housing to match the 22-inch wheels finished in (you guessed it) black. The Night Package is included as part of the G63 Edition 1, which is $19,500 more expensive than the 'regular' G63.

Along with the darker body design, the launch special gains the Exclusive Interior Plus package with black, diamond-quilted Nappa leather seats complete with massage functionality and ventilation. The air vents are finished in a special shade of 'silver shadow', and there are metal AMG badges embedded in the seat backrests.

Gone is the regular open-pore wood or carbon-fibre trim, and in its place is 'red-pepper' carbon trim to match the red decals on the exterior.

  • G63 – $247,700
  • G63 with Night Package – $253,600
