Volkswagen I.D. R unveiled ahead of Pikes Peak

All-electric, likely to be very fast

Volkswagen has revealed renders of the all-electric racer it will use to tackle Pikes Peak this year, dubbed the I.D. R.

The four-wheel-drive racer was teased as a successor to the twin-engine Golf, run as a one-off in the 1987 Pikes Peak hillclimb. Although it was undeniably cool, the 486kW racer failed to reach the finish line.

"It is about time we settled the score," said Volkswagen motorsport director, Sven Smeets.

"The I.D. R Pikes Peak represents an extremely exciting challenge for us, to show what is possible with an electric engine in motorsport. The entire team behind our driver Romain Dumas is highly motivated to set a new record for electric cars."

Beyond the fact it'll be four-wheel drive, details about the I.D. R are hard to come by. There's a serious wing on the back, along with a prototype-style fin off the back of the cockpit. The front splitter will slice your ankles, too.

We know it's chasing the electric vehicle record at Pikes Peak, currently held by Rhys Millen and the eO PP100. The overall course record still belongs to Peugeot and Sebastien Loeb, who flew up the road in just 8:13.878.

The electric record is 8:57.118, set in 2016.

Pikes Peak kicks off on June 24. Stay tuned for some real pictures of the I.D. R in the lead-up to this year's event.
