Ford Mustang GT Ready For Oz

Okay so the headline can be a little misleading, Ford is not bringing the Mustang to Australia, nor is it likely in the near future, but, our fellow Queenslanders at Performax International have just completed the government-approved conversion program to covert the Mustang to right-hand drive.

Priced at $115,000, the iconic Ford Mustang GT coupe or convertible uses a 4.6-litre overhead-cam alloy V8 with 224 kW and 434 Nm mated to a five-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

The car manages to go from 0-97km/h (60 MPH) in an incredible 4.9 seconds meaning 0-100 km/h times should be 5 seconds flat.

Sales have already began with approved registration in any State or Territory with a high-quality conversion to right-hand drive and full compliance to Australian Design Rules.

Performax, best known for their right-hand drive conversion of Corvettes, have gone one step further, they are also bringing out right-hand drive Shelby GT500 Saleen Mustangs.

The Mustang Shelby GT500 will be available only as a Coupe and priced at a staggering $179,990.00. For those interested, it will retain its legendary supercharged 5.4-litre, 32-valve engine (372kW).

Coming back down to earth, the more affordable Mustang GT comes standard with:

  • Air-conditioning
  • Power windows
  • Remote central locking
  • 6-way electrically-adjustable driver's seat
  • 6-CD in-dash audio system
  • Rear boot spoiler
  • ABS brakes
  • Traction control
  • 18-inch alloy wheels with 235/50/ZR18 tyres
  • Four-year/120,000 km warranty, with roadside assistance

Options include Mustang's traditional Le Mans-style wide body stripes and leather upholstery, but the four-year, 120,000 km warranty is definitely something you want to hear when you're buying a car which has had its guts pulled apart and converted to right-hand drive.

Performax International is hoping the GT will appeal to the V8 lovers who are a bit over the HSVs and FPVs and want something to stand out from the pack.

"The current Mustang has been a huge success in the United States because its style and performance capture all the flavour of the original Mustang in a design that is sophisticated and absolutely up-to-date," Performax International General Manager Nick Vandenberg said.

Just how good can a right-hand drive conversion be? Surely it will be plagued with annoying little problems and other issues? Not so, Performax has been in the business for over 20 years, with a current production rate of nearly 200 conversions a year.

"Our conversion to right-hand drive and Australian Design Rules has been completed to the highest standard with our own computer-aided design, engineering and quality finish." Vandenberg said

Best of all, you don't lose any of the original appeal, and according to Performax, the car retains its factory look and driving feel.
