The new-generation Opel Mokka X has been spied on the snowy roads of Sweden this week, giving us a first look at the company’s overhauled CX-3 rival.
Having previously shared its underpinnings with the Chevrolet/Holden Trax, the next-generation of Opel’s popular baby crossover will almost certainly going ride on a platform provided by PSA Peugeot Citroen.
It’s hard to see the vehicle’s design due to the heavy camouflage and false body panels, though it looks like the Mokka X is going to grow in size to distance itself further from the smaller Crossland X.
The tall and skinny proportions remain, though the wheelbase appears to be longer than the current car, which will no doubt improve rear passenger space. It’s likely the new Mokka X’s extra length will also translate to improved luggage capacity.
Other upgrades mooted for the generational change include the option of an all-electric powertrain, along with the latest driver assistance systems and safety technologies.
The current Mokka X isn’t available with systems like autonomous emergency braking or adaptive cruise control, features that an increasing number of rivals are offering optionally or as standard – something the company will want to address with the next generation.
While there’s speculation both front- and all-wheel drive will be offered like the current car, PSA’s recent form points to just the former being available – neither the Peugeot 3008 or 5008 offer all-wheel drive, and the Opel Grandland X doesn’t either.
However, in place of a proper all-wheel drive system, both Opel and Peugeot offer a system called Grip Control, which features a series of different modes to optimise traction in road conditions like snow, sand and dirt.
It’s unlikely we’ll see the new Mokka X in Australia, as a Holden at least, considering PSA’s recent purchase of the former General Motors European arm. However, we could see the Mokka X, or its Peugeot/Citroen equivalent on local roads in the coming years.
