Renault mystery SUV spied in Kadjar clothing

Qui es-tu?

An unknown prototype disguised as a Renault Kadjar has been spied during cold-weather testing in Europe this week, raising questions as to what the French brand has in the works.

While the body is from the Kadjar – which shares its underpinnings with the Nissan Qashqai – this particular vehicle seems to have a bespoke setup beneath the skin.

The photos showing the underside of the prototype reveal a wider track than the standard Kadjar, along with a four-wheel steering system, which Renault calls 4Control. Currently, only the Megane hatch and Talisman sedan offer 4Control.

You'll also notice the tacked-on wheel arch extensions on the body, indicating the production car will likely be wider than the Kadjar.

Considering the Kadjar is only a couple of years old, it's unlikely this prototype is a new-generation model, though we could be wrong.

Maybe it's an early test mule for a Kadjar RS? We'll have to wait and see.

A facelifted version of the Kadjar is expected to make its debut later this year – likely at the Paris motor show in October – which the company's local arm is keen to get its hands on.

Last month Andrew Moore, Renault Australia's managing director, confirmed with CarAdvice discussions regarding the Kadjar's business case were ongoing, after the crossover was previously ruled out for our market due to the high costs associated with shipping it from Spain.

Down Under, the Kadjar would fill the void between the Captur and Koleos, similar to how the Qashqai sits between the Juke and X-Trail.
