It looks like a more hardcore BMW M5 Competition is on the way, with the M Division's president reportedly confirming the new model's development earlier this week.

In a new report by Carscoops, BMW M boss, Frank van Meel, said the M5 MotoGP safety car actually previews what's to come from the more focused version of its super sedan – set to launch later this year.

"MotoGP … offers us the perfect test environment for more innovations. For example, we are using the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car as a development platform for the new BMW M5 Competition, which we will launch in 2018," he said.

It's unclear what exactly is to come other than the cosmetic differences seen on the safety car – think M Performance bumpers and so on – though van Meel added: "The data and information gathered with the safety car during its outings on the racetracks of the world are incorporated in the development of the new BMW M5 Competition".

The 'standard' M5 packs a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 developing 441kW of power and 750Nm of torque. Drive is sent to a rear-biased M xDrive all-wheel drive system via an eight-speed automatic, allowing the super sedan to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 3.4 seconds.

Going off previous form, an M5 Competition should get a slight power bump, along with a track-focused suspension, wheel and tyre setup. Stay tuned to CarAdvice for more updates.
