Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door PHEV coming

And it'll be sub-3.0 seconds to 100km/h

The flagship Mercedes-AMG GT 4 Door super-limo may have a 470kW/900Nm V8 punch, and reach 100km/h in only 3.2 seconds, but a plug-in hybrid model due in 2020 will make it look slow.

Daimler AG boss, Dieter Zetsche, dropped the news an EQ Power+ badged plug-in hybrid version of AMG's new hero was coming. We were lucky enough to have Mercedes-AMG boss, Tobias Moers, expand on that for us.

He told us to look at the Mercedes-AMG GT concept – revealed at the 2017 Geneva motor show – telling us brusquely the plug-in model would be “that”.

The concept ran with a familiar AMG 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo engine backed by an electric motor, with an (early development) system output of about 600kW enabling a sub-three second 100km/h sprint time.

The car will weigh well above two tonnes, and blow the Porsche Panamera e-Hybrid out of the water in a straight line.

The variable AMG 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system in the concept was supported by an electric motor driving the rear wheels directly, with torque vectoring at every wheel.

As in Formula 1, the battery can be charged while the vehicle is driving, and is fully scalable. The pure electric driving range will be at least 50km.

“It’s not a big secret that we’re working on electrification of drivetrains, this gives you a lot of room for new thinking and ideas,” Moers said.
