McLaren Senna GTR Concept revealed

Track-only special gets harder... again

McLaren has removed the few concessions to road-going comfort in the 'regular' Senna, creating the utterly bonkers Senna GTR in the process. Just look at that diffuser!

Just 75 examples of the production GTR will be built, and none of them will see time on the road. This is a track-only proposition, capable of making more than 1000kg of downforce. McLaren says it will be the fastest non-Formula 1 car in its line-up around a track and, on looks alone, we believe them.

Those fenders are wider than before, stretched to accommodate a broader track at both ends of the car. There are also track-honed wheels in place of the (pretty) road-legal ones, wrapped in what appear to be slick Pirelli tyres.

McLaren says the new components can essentially be clipped onto the base structure, making the conversion from Senna to Senna GTR easier than it otherwise would have been.

Power will come from a reworked version of the twin-turbo V8 from the Senna, making more than 605kW – up from a piddling 588kW in the regular car – for a car that's faster in a straight line than before. A race-style transmission will make it easier to slam through the gears, too.

McLaren hasn't quoted a weight figure, but you can expect the GTR to weigh roughly the same as the road-legal Senna. We'd suggest somewhere around 1200kg is about right, depending on trim.

"The McLaren Senna was designed from the outset with the full spectrum of road and track requirements in mind, so developing a GTR version is within the scope of the original project,” says McLaren design engineering director, Dan Parry-Williams.

"The McLaren Senna GTR Concept unveiled in Geneva is not the finished article but it does give a clear indication of our thinking for the car, which promises to be the most extreme and exciting McLaren to drive for many years, if not ever.”
