BMW M8 Gran Coupe concept revealed in Geneva

More doors makes a more 'Gran' coupe

Hot on the heels of the big Mercedes-AMG GT 4 Door Coupe reveal, BMW has pulled back the sheet on a M8 Gran Coupe concept.

Before we get into the Gran Coupe, let's talk about the elephant in the room. This isn't the production M8, or indeed the 8 Series we've been eagerly awaiting. BMW hasn't announced a launch date for those cars, so we'll have to keep on waiting.

Disappointing though that may be, the M8 Gran Coupe is a handsome consolation prize – especially given it's a semi-practical four-door.

For those playing along at home, Gran Coupe (GC) is BMW-speak for a four-door coupe, in a similar vein to the AMG GT 4DCMercedes-Benz CLS or Audi A7 Sportback. Although not conventional coupes, GC models are a more elegant way to carry four (or five) people in relative comfort.

The car's coupe heritage is instantly apparent up front, where it shares its slim headlamps and inverted-kidney grilles with the regular 8 Series on which we're still waiting. CFRP has been used for the air intakes, and the lamps themselves borrow tech from the M8 GTE racer.

A long, flowing roofline and smoothly surfaced flanks lend the car a low, muscular stance, although traditionalists will argue a four-door will never be able to match a conventional two-door for sheer drama.

Speaking of drama, BMW says the "rich surfacing" reaches its "climax" around the C-pillars – just ahead of powerful flared arches, designed to "exude a certain sensuousness". Usually that would be too racy to publish but, given the reveal took place late in the Australian night, we'll given them a pass this time.

As you'd expect of a fully-fledged BMW M coupe, the car has a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic roof to lower the centre of gravity, and spindly aero-mirrors for less drag.

Down back, there are fat quad exhaust pipes and the same slim tail-lights promised by the 8 Series concepts, along with an aggressively-flared boot-lid spoiler. It looks mean, especially in the show-car shade of Saleve Vert (offset with gold highlights, naturally) pictured here.

Are they gonna make it?

BMW is promising a 2019 reveal for the 8 Series Gran Coupe and M8 Gran Coupe. As for the two-door? We're still waiting on official timing, although we know they're coming. Get a move on BMW, a tasty AMG GT vs BMW M8 vs AMG GT 4 Door vs BMW M8 Gran Coupe quad-test awaits.
