Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo revealed

Stuttgart electrifies the SUV as new era draws closer

As its engineers work to bring the 2015 Mission E concept to market, Porsche has tonight unveiled a striking follow-up: the Mission E Cross Turismo.

Clearly drawing on the themes of its low-slung four-door coupe companion, the Mission E Cross Turismo's styling also borrows more than a few cues from the new Panamera wagon and the latest Cayenne SUV.

Whether the Cross Turismo's design is quite as resolved as those new-generation siblings is a matter of opinion, although the jarring addition of bulky cladding, overt skirting and bright blue wheels is sure to polarise.

In all, the Mission E Cross Turismo looks more a jacked-up crossover in the vein of the Audi A6 Allroad and the like, rather than a conventional SUV. That's no surprise, either: the global market likes SUVs, Europe loves wagons, and 60 per cent of current Panamera sales are of the electrified models.

This, then, is something of a catch-em-all design.

Inside, the Cross Turismo's cabin reveals a sleeker and more refined design, suggesting this aspect of the concept is at least the most likely to make the leap to production with few changes.

Production is indeed on the cards, too, with Porsche confirming a 2019 launch plan for this second offering from the Mission E project. Exact details on that front, though, are still to be revealed.

As for what drives the Mission E Cross Turismo, there are no surprises, given it is built on the same 'J1' electric platform that underpins its low-riding mate.

As with that first Mission E concept revealed nearly three years ago, Porsche describes an all-wheel-drive setup with a pair of electric motors offering a combined output of "more than" 440kW of power and an identical 0-100km/h time of 3.5 seconds. Driving range is claimed to be around 480 kilometres off a single charge.

The only other details on offer are that the new concept features a powerful 800-volt fast-charging system, boasting a 0-to-80 per cent charging time of just 15 minutes.

Watch for more on the Mission E Cross Turismo, and the production version of both this and the earlier Mission E car, to come in the months ahead.
