Volkswagen I.D Vizzion concept revealed

New fully autonomous, all-electric concept revealed in official sketches ahead of Geneva debut

Volkswagen has announced it will reveal the fourth member in its I.D. electric car line-up at the Geneva motor show in early March

Called the Vizzion, the new four-door presages a Tesla Model S-rivalling flagship sedan that is planned to go into production as an indirect successor to the discontinued Phaeton at Volkswagen’s Dresden plant in Germany in 2022.

The Vizzion has been conceived to complement upcoming production versions of the I.D. hatchback, I.D. Buzz MPV and I.D. Crozz crossover in an extended line-up of pure-electric models planned by the German car maker as it attempts to move on from the Dieselgate diesel emission manipulation scandal.

A series of teaser sketches issued by Volkswagen reveal the wind cheating appearance of the latest I.D. concept, which is claimed to stretch to a limousine like 5110mm in length.

In profile, the Vizzion shares certain similarities to the earlier Volkswagen XL1 as well as the Gen-E research vehicle developed as part of a future technology program in the styling of its nose section. There are also hints of the I.D. Cross in the heavy curvature of its roof and the sweeping line of its rear pillars.

Drive

Entry to the cabin is via coach style doors. The lack of a B-pillar, meanwhile, provides a large aperture

Inside, there are four individual seats and a centre console that extends back through the cabin. However, the latest Volkswagen concept eschews a traditional dashboard, pedals and steering wheel in a move aimed at highlighting its autonomous driving technology, which Volkswagen hints will provide it with hands-off Level 5 capability when the production version of the I.D. Vizzion arrives in showrooms some four years from now.

Volkswagen has already confirmed that a production version of the I.D. hatchback will enter production in late 2019, while the I.D. Crozz will launch in 2020 and the I.D. Buzz is slated for 2021.
