Showcase: The photographer who caught our eye this week

Ladies and gentlemen, Joel Strickland

The automotive landscape is littered with talented photographers, each with their own style.

This series offers a look at some of the snappers who have caught our attention with their work. This week, it’s Joel Strickland.

Joel is a Melbourne-based snapper, who often works with CarAdvice on garage reviews and comparisons. He's a passionate car guy with an extensive back-catalogue of work with manufacturers, dealers and race teams.

Here are five of his favourite shots, along with an explanation – in his own words – of what went into getting the photo.

"This ex-Peter Brock VP Commodore was photographed in an empty warehouse in rural Victoria. Shot using a technique called light painting, it was a fun and challenging shoot, as we operated in pitch black for most of the job."

"I shot this for Aston Martin. I literally had 5 minutes with Daniel Ricciardo to get a series of shots of him and the Red Bull Racing Edition Vantage. It was shot at dusk in Melbourne during Grand Prix Week. Preparation is the key during shoots like this – everything was set up and the lights were tested before Dan arrived"

"This was taken for Lamborghini as part of the press launch of the new Aventador S at Phillip Island. It was shot on track between sessions. Phillip Island is an amazing track to photograph, with the ocean making for a stunning backdrop."

"This photo was shot for the Targa Tasmania Event Release. The Porsche 911 GT3RS was photographed at dusk in Williamstown, using small portables flashes set around the car. The matte-white wrap on the car helps deliver that silky-smooth look."

"The Bathurst 77 is a limited-edition Ford Mustang built to commemorate the 1977 Ford win at Bathurst. This was shot as a promotional image for Tickford to launch the model to the public.

It was taken using a bunch of portable speedlight flashes around the car, triggered by the camera to help light the car."
