2018 Alpina XD3 revealed

Four – count them, four – turbochargers

Alpina has unveiled the XD3, complete with a quad-turbo inline six engine... that won't be coming to Australia.

European XD3 models will be powered by a heavily reworked take on BMW's 3.0-litre diesel inline six, making 286kW and 770Nm for a 4.6-second sprint to 100km/h.

Meanwhile, right-hand drive markets are offered with a twin-turbo version of the same engine making 246kW of power and 700Nm of torque, for a (still impressive) 4.9-second sprint to the ton. Sure, that's slower than a BMW X3 M40i, but it's quicker than the Audi SQ5.

Regardless of where you live, that power is put to the road through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Along with a re-calibrated version of BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system, the XD3 has been fitted with an active rear limited-slip differential and adjustable dampers.

Along with the mechanical changes, Alpina has fitted its usual array of styling tweaks. That means 20-inch wheels with suitably spindly spokes are standard, with an option for 22-inch forged units. The front bumper and splitter are wrought in the classic Alpina style, as is the rear diffuser and quad tailpipes.

Unique instruments and badging have been added inside, but it's mostly standard BMW fare otherwise. That's no bad thing, given the X3 is already a nice place to spend time.

Australia

Alpina Automobiles hasn't made a decision regarding the XD3 in Australia. We'll be sure to update you when it does.
