2018 MG 3 spied in Alice Springs – UPDATE

Chinese light hatch gets new face

Update (27/2): MG's local division has confirmed it is expecting the updated MG 3 range in the third quarter of this year. Get the full story here.

The facelifted MG3 hatchback has been spied in Alice Springs this week, giving us an early preview of the reworked light car.

Spotted by an eagle-eyed CarAdvice reader, the camouflaged hatchback shows its heavily revised face – which is clearly inspired by the ZS crossover – new bumpers, and revised tail-light internals.

We can see the outline of the new LED daytime-running light signature, again debuted on the larger ZS, and projector headlights.

The rear hasn't changed too much in terms of the overall shape, though the tail-lights have seen revised – the indicator no longer takes up half of the lighting unit, and it's a darker shade of red.

Snaps of the interior don't reveal a whole lot, due to the heavy black sheets concealing just about all of the cabin, though we'd expect an updated dashboard and steering wheel design, along with revised materials and trims.

We reckon the infotainment system available in higher models will be updated to the same unit used in the ZS, which involves a 8.0-inch touchscreen with smartphone mirroring.

In its home market of China, the system will likely feature the company's new smart voice assistant that can control various vehicle functions like the air conditioning and windows.

We're also expecting (and hoping) the new MG3 to be available with a revised engine range, potentially headlined by the 81kW/160Nm 1.0-litre turbo three-pot from the ZS.

CarAdvice has contacted MG's local division for further comments regarding the updated MG3, and is awaiting a response. Stay tuned for an update.
