Volkswagen T-Roc convertible coming in 2020

T-Roc, drop-top

A drop-top take on the Volkswagen T-Roc is set for production, but we'll have to wait until 2020 for a full unveil.

There have been a few notable high-riding convertibles in recent years, including Range Rover Evoque and, in the USA, the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet.

Neither has been a runaway success, but that hasn't stopped Volkswagen from having a crack. Based on the teaser image revealed this weekend, the T-Roc convertible will be a two-door with a folding soft-top, with a swoopier coupe-style roofline than the regular car – similar to the 2016 T-Cross Breeze concept (below).

Why does the world need an SUV with a folding roof? Volkswagen says crossovers will account for 40 per cent of sales in 2020, and wants to expand its range to meet that demand.

Given it's over a year away, details about the T-Roc convertible are hard to come by. The standard version – which is meant to be coming to Australia at some point, but keeps being pushed back – is powered by a range of three- and four-cylinder engines, headlined by a 140kW four-cylinder turbo petrol.

Front- and all-wheel drive are both available, along with manual and DSG transmission options.
