Lindsay Fox: the CarAdvice interview with Australia’s car-obsessed trucking icon

Meet Lindsay Fox. One of the most down-to-earth businessmen you’ll ever meet. Although his trucking empire, Linfox, has made him a very wealthy man, he doesn’t like to boast about it too much. Even his business card simply reads Lindsay E. Fox – truck driver.

Fox started from the bottom over 60 years ago when he purchased his first truck to deliver soft drink. Nowadays, 80-year-old Fox has taken a step back from the company, which over time has seen Linfox fleet grow to over 5000 trucks and become the biggest supply chains solution company in the Asia-Pacific region.

With his fortune, Fox feeds his love of cars, and in particular, very rare automobiles. Part of the Fox Collection – which you can see for a small entry fee in Melbourne – includes cars that we could only dream of owning, such as the Ferrari F40, Jaguar E-Type, Lexus LFA, and Porsche 718 RSK.

We got the chance to interview Fox at the Fox Collection to find out more about his passion for cars. A Volkswagen Beetle was over his right shoulder and a Mercedes-Benz 300SL to his left. He was wearing braces with Minis on them.

So, what attracts Fox to cars?

"Design and history. A lot of the cars when I was a young fella, I couldn't afford them," Fox said.

He particularly likes limited-number cars, taking delivery later this year of the Mercedes AMG Project One. With only eight units making their way to Australia and New Zealand, he is excited to get his hands on it.

"It will be a special car. This one has about 800 horsepower. You put your foot down and if you don't watch youself, you could get into all sorts of trouble."

Fox is also impressed by the long warranties manufacturers are now offering, pointing out Kia's seven-year warranty.

"I don't know anybody from Kia, I've never bought a Kia, but I'm tremendously impressed by the aspect of them selling a car with the confidence they will keep it under warranty for  seven years, for no extra cost."
