The new MX-5 Roadster is going to cost just a tad more than the current MX-5 convertible (which costs $42,000). Nevertheless the Roadster version adds vehicle security and improved weather protection. Mazda Australia has stated that the MX-5 Roadster Coupe will be available in Australia in October 2006 and will be priced below $50,000. Mazda Australia has not given any exact figures as of yet.
The MX-5 Roadster Coupe is powered by the same engine that currently powers the MX-5 (MZR 4-cylinder engine). The 2.0-litre, 16-valve engine has a maximum power output of 118kW @ 6700rpm and 188Nm of torque @ 5000rpm. The MX-5 has never been a fast car, the current MX-5 goes from 0-100 in 7.8 while the new Mazda MX-5 Roadster Couple due to its extra wieght gets from 0-100km/h in around 7.9 seconds. The new MX-5 Roadster Coupe will be on sale in Australia from October 2006, for under $50,000.
Mazda says that the roadster has come about due to MX-5 customer feedback. If you watch the Video from Mazda, you will notice that Mazda take a great deal of effort to let you know that the roof, folded or not, takes no extra space out of your boot and only takes 12 seconds to open up and fold away behind the cabin compartment.
The Mazda MX-5 Roadster Couple weighs 37kg more than the standard MX-5 with its cloth roof. But Mazda claims that the extra weight will have no negative effects on the handling, infact they believe the new Roadster will handle even better than the current model!
Mazda has worked hard to give some exclusive features to set the MX-5 Roadster Coupe apart from the soft-top model. Noteworthy mentions include various body parts which have chrome plating, adding refinement to sportiness. Also, the high-mount stop lamp looks sleeker and more refined than that of the soft-top model thanks partly to a slimmer design and partly to a white - as opposed to red - lens.
