Citroen: Next C4 and C4 Cactus to become one – report
Quirky crossover to become sole small-car offering for French brand
The next-generation Citroen C4 and C4 Cactus look set to become one and the same, with the company's boss confirming the move for 2021.
Speaking with Autocar, Xavier Peugeot, head of PSA Group, said the two models will "converge" in the next-generation, making the crossover-styled hatchback the sole small-segment offering – set to duke it out with the likes of the Volkswagen Golf, and Peugeot's own 308.
"We needed to reduce our line-up to eight silhouettes [as demanded by Citroen’s parent company PSA’s boss Carlos Tavares], so one of these models had to go. The C4 and C4 Cactus are converging into one," Xavier Peugeot said.
"I believe this car will continue to polarise, though a little bit less than the last. I like this because I believe Citroen should challenge the norm."
The British publication says the C4 Cactus was originally meant to be a temporary replacement for the regular C4 range (above), which is currently out of production.
However, Xavier Peugeot added the next-gen model may need to tone down the SUV styling further to avoid confusion with SUV models like the C3 Aircross.
The current C4 Cactus has just been facelifted – due in Australia "late 2018" – with the updated version to stay on sale for at least three years based on the 2021 timing given by PSA.
Headlining the updates are fewer 'Air Bumps' than the original, cleaner designs at the front and rear, along with the company's Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension system.
