Mercedes-AMG to reveal four-door coupe in Geneva – report

New GT can carry the kids

Mercedes-AMG looks likely to reveal the final take on its standalone four-door 'GT' at the Geneva motor show next month – according to new reports.

We can't find confirmation through the company's press or social channels, but Motor Authority says Mercedes-AMG has confirmed the 'GT Coupe' for the Geneva event.

Additionally, Tobias Moers, Mercedes-AMG CEO, tweeted photos of camouflaged prototypes with the following caption – "Shortly we will welcome a new member to the #AMGGTfamily. My team and I are now in the final testing phase before the upcoming world premiere".

It's interesting the new model is being referred to as the 'GT Coupe' – Mercedes has a habit of calling anything with a sloping roofline a 'coupe', regardless of whether it has two doors, four doors, or an SUV body.

The four-door GT should be based heavily on the GT sedan concept revealed in Geneva last year, but we aren't sure whether it will debut the 600kW hybrid drivetrain of the show car.

Underneath the skin, the GT sedan should feature the same underpinnings as the E-Class, rather than the bespoke platform of the two-door GT family.

Regardless of whether the hybrid is available from launch, expect power to come from the company's familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, mated to a 4Matic+ performance-oriented all-wheel drive system and a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Stay tuned for our coverage of the Geneva motor show next month.
