Manifattura Automobili Torino (MAT) has announced plans to build 25 examples of the modern Lancia Stratos previewed in 2010.
The car will be built in three different trim levels: road-going supercar, GT racing entrant and – forgive us for getting excited – a safari-spec rally racer.
Back in 2010, there were plans to build 50 cars on a Ferrari F430 platform, before the Prancing Horse stepped in and shut the operation down. 40 people had expressed interest in the project when it was killed.
Depending on who you ask, that was because the Italian manufacturer objected to having its components repurposed in a car bearing the Lancia badge, or because the Stratos might have shown the F430 a clean set of heels on a track. You be the judge on that one.
Its claimed 0-100km/h time was just 3.3 seconds, and the 0-200km/h sprint flew past in less than 10 seconds. Top speed was 274km/h.
Now, a partnership between MAT and Michael Stoschek, chairman of German automotive supplier Brose Group, has opened the door for another attempt.
Beyond the fact it will be based on a Ferrari, details about the latest car’s underpinnings are hard to come by. There’s also no word on what will power it, although the engine will make around 410kW. We’d bank on a modern Ferrari V8 engine.
By way of comparison, the original Lancia Stratos was powered by a Ferrari-sourced V6 engine making 140kW, and hit 100km/h in just under five seconds.
The modern car will be homologated for the road, and all 25 owners will work side-by-side with MAT to customise their cars, as is common in limited-run supercar builds. Oh, and the helmet-holding door-bins from the original concept will carry over.
