2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI Original: Quick drive
The 'purist' GTI is back. Three doors, limited options, and a good whack cheaper than the regular model. That's the 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI Original.
Volkswagen's Australian arm confirmed the new $37,490 offering in August last year, after having first offered the GTI Performance Edition 1 three-door at just over $10,000 more than the Original.
That barely-sub-$38,000 price tag gets you the six-speed manual version of the Original, but another couple of grand will drop you into the six-speed DSG, if that's your thing. (Wouldn't really be living up to the 'original' tag, though…)
Standard kit includes tartan seat trim, 18-inch 'Sevilla' black alloy wheels with red pinstriping, 'Original' badging, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (but no factory navigation), and city-speed autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
It's otherwise the Golf 7.5 GTI we're all familiar with, with motivation in the Original provided by the same 169kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol as the regular model.
Volkswagen invited CarAdvice out for a quick drive of the GTI Original this week. We sent our mate Joe Achilles out to sample the new entry model before we bring it in for a proper test. Catch his video above.
