2018 Skoda Fabia revealed for Geneva show

Here in Q3 with an unchanged engine lineup

Skoda has tonight unveiled the refreshed 2018 Fabia, ahead of its full debut at the Geneva motor show in March.

Although it isn't an all-new model, the fresh Fabia boasts a host of improvements over the current car, with more technology and sharper looks on offer.

The refreshed supermini will be offered exclusively with three-cylinder MPI and TSI 1.0-litre engines in Europe, each in two states of tune. The MPI is offered in 44kW and 55kW trim, while the TSI is available with 70kW or 81kW.

Paul Pottinger, communications boss for Skoda Australia, said the current engine line-up will carry over, meaning the 70kW and 81kW TSI engines will be offered locally. The base model is currently offered with a five-speed manual, while the top-spec is offered only with a DSG automatic transmission.

On the technology front, the latest Fabia will be offered with the latest suite of semi-autonomous driver assists. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts and auto-switching high beam headlamps will all be available.

As is currently the case, the car will also have a rear-view camera, front assist (30-160km/h) with auto-emergency braking up to 30km/h.

Inside, the 'Swing' infotainment system now includes a 6.5-inch display in the centre console, home to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. When the optional navigation is added, the car comes with real-time traffic information as well.

Skoda has hung its hat on the 'Simply Clever' mantra, and the refreshed Fabia is clearly doing its best to fit that mould. There's an ice scraper integrated into the fuel-filler cap, which, naturally, also incorporates a tyre-tread measuring tool.

With the right options boxes ticked, rear-seat passengers get their own USB ports, and the boot mat is double-sided. There's even an LED torch integrated into the side of the boot.

As for the new exterior design? Well, we aren't exactly the last word in style or fashion, but the car looks like a slightly sharper, more aggressive take on the current design – a very Volkswagen Group approach to mid-life (or any) changes.

The new Fabia should be arriving in Australia in Q3, 2018. Paul Pottinger says there are "no rises planned" for the price, which means the car will likely start at $16,890 in 70TSI trim, and run to $21,040 in 81TSI DSG Wagon guise.
