Alpina B5: Price slashed ahead of March launch

Super sedan to start at $210,000 before on-roads

Alpina Automobiles has taken a knife to the price of the B5 BiTurbo sedan, slashing nearly $30,000 off the price announced in October last year.

Originally listed at $239,900 before on-road costs, the company's local arm has confirmed it has repositioned the 5 Series-based sports luxury model to better compete with its competitors.

Now kicking off at $210,000 plus ORCs, Alpina has effectively knocked $30,000 off the B5 before it officially lands in local showrooms, which likely has something to do with the $199,900 starting price of the new BMW M5.

"The new B5 is arriving into Australia and entering a market that is fiercely competitive," said Phil Jeffery, Australian sales manager for Alpina.

"Our price position shows we are focused to deliver to the customer not only the greatest drive experience and the highest level of premium quality, but a vehicle that represents excellent value for money and allows more consumers to experience this truly bespoke brand."

Powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, the Alpina B5 pumps out a meaty 447kW of power and 800Nm of torque – 6kW and 50Nm up on the M5.

The car sprints from 0-100km/h in just 3.5 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 330km/h – good luck finding somewhere to test that in Australia, though.

Standard equipment includes 20-inch Alpina Classic alloy wheels, nappa leather trim, four-zone climate control, and Comfort Seats. There's also a digital driver's display, rear-wheel steering, and a stainless steel exhaust system with quad tailpipes.

Despite the healthy equipment list, buyers can still choose from myriad cost options, including including a Lavalina leather interior ($12,253-$22,244), wireless Apple CarPlay ($395), massaging function for the front seats ($1866), remote parking function ($943), a Bowers & Wilkins sound system ($8766) and a rear seat entertainment system ($4336).

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for a local drive review when the Alpina B5 lands on our shores in March.
