2019 BMW X2 M35i spied

Hotter SUV-coupe on the way

A hotter BMW X2 has been snapped testing in the snow, wearing bigger brakes and a more aggressive front end.

The most powerful global X2 is currently the xDrive28i, with power coming from a 170kW four-cylinder engine. In Australia, the range will be limited to sDrive 18i, sDrive 20i and xDrive 20d, meaning the most powerful local offering makes 140kW.

That could change when the performance-oriented car pictured here – the badge it will wear is yet to be determined, but we'd suggest it could be an M30i or even M35i to make its range-topping position clear – arrives. It's expected to make around 220kW of power from a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, put to the road through a sports-tuned xDrive all-wheel drive setup.

Out back, a pair of fat exhaust pipes are a clear hint at the extra performance potential lurking within, while bigger brakes are clamped by blue 'M Sport' calipers.

The wheels appear to be cut from the same cloth as those on the M240i, too, albeit with a slightly more 'rugged' look about them. The front end has also been reworked, with what appears to be an M-style bumper hiding behind camouflage.

Although it didn't provide any images, our spy 'agency' said the seat-backs on this werkstestwagen were hidden, potentially to cover badging that would reveal the model name.

Stay tuned for more on the hottest X2 on CarAdvice.
