2018 Mercedes-Benz A-Class supports car sharing with ‘friends and family’

The fourth-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class not only debuts the company's new MBUX infotainment system, but can be shared without physically handing over a set of keys.

At the end of his speech introducing the hatchback, Dieter Zetsche, head of Mercedes-Benz, announced new A-Class will support "casual private car sharing with friends and family".

According to the Mercedes-Benz chief: "An authorised person will be able to open the car using the Mercedes Me app for a predefined period of time. They will find and leave the key in the car."

Although this new feature is meant to be used with "friends and family", it's not clear if there will be any technological barriers preventing owners from using it as part of a money-making service, whether through your one's own private endeavours or via a third-party app.

Another new feature making its Mercedes-Benz debut in the A-Class is the extended vehicle exit warning system, which keeps a look out for cyclists for at least three minutes after parking.

Unlike the system available in the Audi A8, the A-Class doesn't actively prevent you from opening the door in such a situation. Rather, it uses visual and audio alarms to grab your attention, and, hopefully, prevent a coming together of the cyclist and the door.
