Toyota recalls 24,000 vehicles for airbag fix

Corolla, Fortuner, HiLux and Prius affected

Toyota has issued a recall for 23,964 vehicles across its 2015 Corolla, Fortuner, HiLux and Prius model lines over concerns a faulty sensor could cause the airbags to deactivate.

According to the Japanese automotive giant, the insulations on the IC chips peel over time on affected cars, creating an open circuit.

If the condition occurs, the airbag warning light will illuminate, while the side/curtain and/or front airbags could be deactivated.

Toyota says the fault is caused by "two separate manufacturing issues", with the non-deployment of airbags posing an obvious risk of injury should the vehicle be involved in a collision.

Number of affected units by model line can be viewed below:

  • Corolla sedan - 3850 units
  • Fortuner - 2526 units
  • HiLux - 17,554 units
  • Prius - 38 units

The recalled vehicles were produced from June 2015 through December 2015. It's worth noting this is not a Takata-related recall.

Owners will be notified by Toyota Australia, though parts availability isn't expected until the second quarter of 2018.

Toyota advises that no reported incidents or injuries as a result of the fault. Repair time is expected to take between one and seven hours dependent on model and the number of sensors that require replacement.
