Skoda Vision X concept previewed

New crossover design study to debut in Geneva

The Skoda Vision X concept has been revealed in designer drawings, ahead of its unveiling at the Geneva motor show next month.

Said to preview a new "urban crossover", the Vision X also sets the direction for Skoda's next generation of SUVs – headlined by a two-tier headlight cluster, "distinctive bumpers", "dominant side sills"and "precise lines".

According to Skoda, the edgy look and three-dimensional bodywork were inspired by traditional Czech glasswork. Massive 20-inch alloys fill the arches, while the eye-catching paintwork is dubbed 'FlexGreen'.

There are obvious links to the current SUV range at the rear – including the Kodiaq and Karoq – largely due to the sharp creases in the tailgate, slim and angular tail-lights, and chunky rear bumper.

In the sketches, the rear bumper also incorporates a diffuser-style treatment with dual exhaust outlets, though it's unclear at this stage whether the openings will be functional or ornamental – think Audi Q5.

Inside, the Vision X debuts a whole new interior design language, too. There's a massive floating centre display and a minimal approach to physical buttons and dials, along with a new steering wheel design and a fully-digital instrument cluster.

Skoda hasn't quite given a timeline of when to expect the production version of this model, nor what it will be called, though we can expect that the Vision X previews the Czech brand's version of the Audi Q2 and Volkswagen T-Roc/T-Cross.

Such a model would compete with the likes of the Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-3 and Toyota C-HR, along with Europe's best-selling crossover – the Nissan Qashqai.

In the meantime, Australians can expect the larger Karoq (above) to arrive in local showrooms around June 2018, priced from around the $30,000 mark.

While it's early days, we could expect a sub-Karoq crossover from Skoda to be priced around the $25,000 bracket, making it one of, if not the most affordable European SUVs one could buy in Australia.
