Ultra-rare Lamborghini LM002 sells for $390,000

For just a tad more than the new Lamborghini Urus, which one would you prefer?

The Lamborghini LM002 was the most outrageous, fastest, and meanest four-wheel drive on the planet between 1986 and 1992. The latest to sell, courtesy of RM Sotheby's, has a price on-par with what you'd pay for a current Urus.

Using history as a guide, we were expecting the car to sell for around US$500,000 ($650,000).

Originally conceived to win a military contract in the Middle East, the 'Rambo Lambo' was designed as a high-speed recon vehicle, with kevlar reinforced tyres, armour plating and long travel suspension.

The company didn't win the contract, though, and the vehicles were kitted out with sumptuous interiors and offered to the public.

Powered by the same V12 engine used in the Countach, it could hit more than 200km/h (120mph) – unheard of for an off-road vehicle in its time, and still impressive today.

Just 328 vehicles were produced. At the time, the LM002 was selling for around $160,000 USD ($200,000 AUD).

Now, the car commands a handy premium over its original sticker price. Previous examples have sold for between US$450,000 and $550,000 ($580,000 - $713,000), while the latest one came sold for just shy of US$300,000 ($390,000).

By contrast, the newly-released Lamborghini Urus is selling for $390,000 before on-road costs in Australia. If Porsche Cayenne depreciation trends are a guide, you could reasonably expect the Urus to be worth half as much in around five years.

The question is, would you rather the brand new, upmarket Urus? Or would you shell out more for the old Rambo-Lambo LM002? We'd love to hear your thoughts!
