Alfa Romeo 6C sports car being prepared for 2020 – report

`

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is reportedly readying the Alfa Romeo 6C sports car for an early 2020 launch.

Pogea Racing, based in Germany with a recent history tuning and modifying Alfa Romeos, posted the claim on its Facebook page on the weekend.

According to the Pogea, "an absolute trustworthy and legit source" has confirmed the Italian luxury marque is working on a new sports car, to be known as the 6C.

An early 2020 launch is being targeted, while a concept previewing the car will reportedly debut at a motor show this or next year.

If the new car follows the naming convention laid out by the 4C and 8C, which had four- and eight-cylinder engines respectively, the new model should be powered by a six-cylinder motor.

Given the fact that the Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio both employ a Ferrari-designed twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6 engine, it's likely this new model, should it come to be, will use the same mill to achieve economies of scale.

Pogea claims its source "is very deep into the decisions of the management of Alfa Romeo", and says the source's previous claims have all come true.

Naturally, given the unusual source, we should take this news with a grain of salt. Alfa Romeo has a history littered with unfulfilled promises, too.

In 2014, Sergio Marchionne launched a turnaround plan for Alfa Romeo, which aimed to turn the storied brand into a true competitor for Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus.

Backed by a €5 billion ($7.7 billion) investment, Fiat Chrysler promised to launch eight new Alfa Romeo vehicles by 2018, with most based on the newly developed Gorgio rear- and all-wheel drive platform.

Two years later, citing "uncertainties in China", the target date was pushed back to 2020. At the time of publication, just two new vehicles, the Giulia and Stelvio, have seen the light of day.

Last year, Reid Bigland, head of Alfa Romeo and Maserati, conceded even that plan "had slipped a bit", with the company still tossing up whether it should make its next major model a crossover either one size up or one size down from the Stelvio.
