Pre-war wonders go under the hammer

A number of pre-war vehicles will be in the spotlight for the upcoming Shannons Late Summer Auction, which sees a 1935 Auburn 653 Phaeton that’s been in the same family since new going under the hammer.

Once a carriage manufacturer, Auburn was considered one of the most elegant American cars of the ‘20s, and this example (top) is no exception, having undergone a full restoration in ’90s.

Its original owner drove the car until his death in 1957; then it was kept at the family farm in Adelaide until 1975 where it was stored in a workshop for two decades until the restoration began.

Shannons is expecting international interest with bids between the range of $90,000 - $110,000. A 1936 model sold for $104,000 in 2016.

Models from the roaring ‘20s include a 1927 Rolls-Royce New Phantom (above) that made its way to Australia in 1933 to become a rebodied Martin & King seven-seat limousine. Some neat features included a sunroof, smoked glass rain deflectors, a wind-down rear window and a secret jewellery alcove.

The bidding guide for this black beauty is expected to be in the $90,000 - $100,000 bracket.

Meanwhile, according to the documented history of this 1929 Rolls-Royce (above), this 20/25 model is believed to be the 10th built. Its chassis was on display at the 1930 Melbourne Motor Show followed by a Martin & King saloon body being fitted. This car could sell between $80,000 to $90,000.

Finally, the unusual 1938 Graham 96 ‘Spirit of Motion’ (below) is a rare sedan Down Under, being only one of 12 imported for that year. The car was used on a mail run in the Western District of Victoria until it had a break in 1997 where its current owner collected parts for 10-years for a major restoration.

It is being sold with no reserve with a price range between $20,000 - $25,000.

Later models going under the hammer are a 1951 Holden 48-215 FX, 1987 BMW E30 M3, 1977 Porsche 930 Turbo, 1968 Holden Monaro HK GTS and a 2007 Ford BF Falcon Cobra GT.

The auction will take place at 40 Corporate Drive, Cheltenham, Victoria on February 19.
