2019 Jeep Cherokee detailed in Detroit

The facelifted 2019 Jeep Cherokee has been detailed this week as part of its public debut at the Detroit motor show.

Compared to the model it replaces, the updated SUV features revised styling, a powerful new engine option, and the company's latest infotainment system.

Headlining updates include a revised exterior, scrapping the previous model's polarising split headlight design for a cleaner and more conventional front aesthetic. The fog-lights now reside where the main headlight beams used to be, while the former LED daytime-running light strip has been enlarged to include the entire headlight unit.

There's also a new bonnet, and the LED tail-lights have been revised too. Meanwhile, Jeep has added a new, lighter tailgate that is electrically-operated via foot gestures on certain grades.

Filling the arches are several new alloy wheel designs, including 19-inch polished units on the top-spec Overland variant.

Inside, the updated Cherokee range features a new version of Jeep's Uconnect infotainment system, which now incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

There's new trims, a "resculpted" centre console hub, and the availability of Nappa leather upholstery on certain models. New interior colour schemes like Storm Blue and Dark Sienna are available on Latitude/Latitude Plus and Overland variants respectively.

Jeep has expanded the Cherokee's luggage area by over three inches (76mm), expanding the seats-up volume to "over" 27 cubic feet (764L).

Headlining the changes, though, is a new 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which puts out a meaty 201kW (270hp) of power and 400Nm of torque.

Like the wider range, the 2.0-litre engine is mated to a revised nine-speed automatic transmission that has been tuned for enhanced refinement and driveability. The four-cylinder turbocharged mill also features idle stop/start technology.

Additionally, the 202kW/324Nm 3.2-litre V6 and 134kW/230Nm 2.4-litre petrol engines have been carried over.

Lastly, the facelifted Cherokee is available with the latest driver assistance technologies, including automated parking, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Jeep says there's more than 80 available safety and security features, along with eight airbags as standard.

Australia

David Harding, senior manager for corporate communications at Jeep's local division, confirmed with CarAdvice the updated Cherokee line-up will consist of four trim grades – Sport, Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk – scheduled to launch here mid-year.

At this stage, only the 2.4-litre and 3.2-litre engines are confirmed for our market, all mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. It appears the new 2.0-litre turbo won't be available Down Under for the time being.
